Products for Second Messengers
In order to function, cells must interact with their environment, which involves receiving and responding to external stimuli, such as hormones. Some of these molecules can enter the target cell to elicit the desired effect. However, most invoke their response, by activating other, intracellular molecules. Second messengers are small, intracellular molecules that change in concentration in response to these stimuli, usually via a membrane associated receptor. The most commonly studied second messengers are cAMP, IP3 and Ca2+.
Study of second messengers is often used as a way of studying G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) activation.
